How to "Make Your Mark” During Older Americans Month

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) honors elderly Americans every May with Older Americans Month (OMA). This is a perfect time for us all to promote senior independence and the role home health can play in helping seniors. “Make Your Mark” is this year’s theme for OMA. The theme was chosen by the ACL to recognize the many contributions older Americans make in our lives and throughout our communities every day.

You can make your mark by educating seniors in your community on the benefits and affordability of home care. A large percentage of seniors live on a fixed income which can cause them to shy away from services they think they cannot afford. You can educate people at senior centers, skilled nursing facilities, and assisted living communities in your area. While you are visiting these places, you can drop off helpful tools like Health Logs and Disease  Information Brochures with your logo on them.

Seniors have a lot of knowledge, fellowship, and friendship to share. Here are some ideas on how you can show your appreciation and engage with seniors in your community:

  • Host a game day at your local adult day center. TAG’s Puzzle Books are the perfect game to stimulate the brain.

  • Inquire at local nursing homes about patients who have little or no visitors and make it part of your weekly routine to stop in for a visit.

  • Enjoy lunch at assisted living communities in your area. Share a meal and some good stories with the residents.

  • Arrange events at senior centers and partner with organizations such as The Red Hat Society or Seniors Meetup Groups.
